    Knockout Halftones - Affinity Tutorial

    MAIN INSTRUCTIONS

    Step 1. Add Your Image

    Open the main Knockout Halftones file with a File > Open command. In the Layers Panel, paste and position your image into the YOUR IMAGE layer. Hide the EXAMPLE IMAGE layer.

    Step 2. Adjust Light/Dark Levels

    Double click the “light/dark LEVELS” layer thumbnail. A Levels window with sliders will open. Adjust the sliders to achieve the level of contrast you are seeking.

    Step 3. Choose a Halftone Style

    Click the dropdown arrow for the “HALFTONES” layer and turn on visibility of ONE of the halftone sublayers. Turn off visibility of all other halftone patterns.

    Steps 1–3 in the Affinity Layers panel: YOUR IMAGE layer (1), Levels sliders (2), and the HALFTONES group (3).

    Step 4. Scale Your Halftone Dot / Line Size

    4.1) Select the FILL Tool.
    Please note: if you are using version 2.5 of Affinity, this tool may be called the GRADIENT TOOL.

    4.2) Click to select your visible “HALFTONES” layer.

    4.3) Adjust the handles to scale and rotate the halftone pattern.

    Step 5. Export Your Image as a Transparent PNG

    Make sure the “Background” layer visibility is turned off. Go to File > Export > Export and choose PNG as the file type.

    Step 4: the Fill Tool (4.1), selecting the visible HALFTONES layer (4.2), and adjusting the on-canvas handles (4.3).

    • Drawings — Your image will need to have some mid-tones. Halftone patterns are generated with any gradient between 100% white and 100% black.
    • Logos & Text — Same rule: mid-tones are needed. If your text or logo is pure black & white, add a Gaussian blur or a gradient to create tones the halftone can work with.
