    Knockout Halftones - Photoshop Tutorial

    For Adobe Photoshop (Desktop) - Mac & PC. Instant 100% transparent halftones.

    MAIN INSTRUCTIONS

    Step 1. Add Your Image

    Open the main KNOCKOUT HALFTONES PSD file. Go to Window > Layers to open your Layers Panel. In the Layers Panel, paste and position your image into the “YOUR IMAGE” layer (or just below it). Hide the existing “EXAMPLE IMAGE” layer.

    Step 2. Adjust Light/Dark Levels (Important!)

    Double click the “light/dark LEVELS” layer thumbnail. A Properties window with Light / Medium / Dark sliders will open. Adjust these to achieve the level of contrast you are seeking.

    The sliders will help you remove tiny stray dots in light areas, as well as removing too much dark in other areas of your image.

    Steps 1–4 in the Photoshop Layers panel: YOUR IMAGE layer (1), light/dark LEVELS (2), the HALFTONES group (3), and pattern layer selection (4).

    Step 3. Choose a Halftone Style

    In the Layers Panel, click the dropdown arrow for the “HALFTONE” layer and turn on visibility of ONE of the halftone sublayers. Turn off visibility of all other halftone patterns.

    Step 4. Scale and Angle Your Halftone Dot / Line Size

    Double click the “HALFTONES” layer thumbnail to adjust the scale and angle of the halftone pattern of your choice.

    Step 5. Export Your Image as a Transparent PNG

    Make sure the top “Background” layer visibility is turned off. Go to File > Save for Web and use the settings shown below for best results (PNG-8, 2 colors, Transparency on, No Dither).

    Alternatively, you can copy and paste your transparent halftone image into another Photoshop or Illustrator document using Edit > Copy Merged.

    Pattern Fill scale/angle settings (Step 4) and the Save for Web export settings (Step 5).

    • Drawings — Your image will need to have some mid-tones. Halftone patterns are generated with any gradient between 100% white and 100% black.
